Range Hoods Questions:
Stainless steel hoods should be washed regularly with a clean cloth, warm water and mild soap or dish detergent. Clean in the direction of the polish lines. Rinse well with clear water and wipe dry immediately. You may wish to apply light oil used for furniture polishing to emphasize its bright finish. Wiping regularly with mild soap/detergent and warm water should protect painted range hood surfaces. Be cautious about using "New and Improved" cleaning agents. Your range hood is installed over hot cooking equipment. Most chemicals found in cleaning agents react with heat to loosen paint.
The aluminum mesh grease filters should be washed in your dishwasher approximately every month depending on the amount of usage. Wash often if your cooking style generates greater grease like frying foods or wok cooking. You cannot clean the non-ducted charcoal/carbon filters; they must be replaced.
Yes. Whether your current OTR is non-ducted or ducted, we offer a complete line of range hoods to effectively ventilate your cooking area
Range hoods always should be ducted to the outside of the home whenever possible. Ductless conversion is intended for applications where an exhaust duct work is not possible to be installed. When re-circulation kit is installed, the range hood functions as a purifying range hood rather than an exhuast hood. Fumes and exhaust from cooking is drawn and filtered by a set of charcoal/carbon filters. The air is then purified and re-circulated back within the home. While charcoal/carbon filters trap some of the grease and odors from normal cooking, the humidity, smoke and heat will all be re-circulated back within the home. If the non-ducted filters are not regularly replaced, eventually the grease and odor catching effect will no longer protect your home from impurities.
Range hoods must be vented using metal duct. Given a choice between flexible metal duct and smooth metal duct, go with the smooth. The ridges found in flexible metal duct create turbulence and will diminish airflow. NEVER use 4" dryer duct or any plastic duct on a range hood installation. The minimum size duct allowed on most range hoods is 3.25" by 10" which is equivalent to 6" round. More powerful hoods require even larger duct sizes up to 10" round. Consult the specifications for the model you have chosen. When remodeling, changing hoods, or cooking equipment types, do not reduce the ductwork size to less than the size or specified for the range hood. Decreasing the duct size restricts the performance of the range hood ventilator.
Hoods are ducted to the outdoors through metal ducting. The size required is determined by the model used and the distance that must be covered. Please consult with range hood's user's manual.
It depends on the frequency and type of cooking that is performed. Normally, every three to six months is recommended for replacing the charcoal/carbon filters.
For maximum performance keep the duct straight and short. Use the shortest route with the fewest turns possible. 45° turns are better than 90° turns. Be sure to use an external roof or wall cap. If in doubt, consult a qualified designer/installer knowledgeable in ventilation or contact us.
No. You should never exhaust air into spaces within walls, ceilings, attics, crawl spaces or garages. The humidity and grease collect in the space and present a huge fire danger. This is especially important to why we strongly recommend you to have a professional installer do this type of installation.
Do not install in-line or external fans to boost a range hood that has it's own power unit. In general, attempting that type of "boost" will not be effective. Also, most cooking ventilation products are designed with fan switches matched to the original motor amp ratings and would not support the increased amp draw from additional motor installations. This type of tampering voids the original manufacturer's warranty.
Sone and dBA can not be converted linear. The best estimated conversion that we could get from decibels to sones is by using this formula: dBA = 40 + 33.22 x log (sones).
CFM stands for Cubic Feet per Minute. It is a unit of measurement used to describe the volume of air 'sucked' in by the range hood in one minute. The higher the CFM number, the greater the amount of air that is exhausted by the range hood. The recommended minimum range hood capacity is 150 CFM to 160 CFM. For high output gas ranges or cook tops, the rate of 100 CFM of ventilation per 10,000 BTU is recommended. A separate ventilation system may be required for high performance range hoods, please consult your local building codes and standards for more details.
A Sone is an internationally recognized unit of loudness. Sones are a linear measure like inches. Doubling the Sone value is equivalent to doubling the loudness. To get a sense of what one Sone represents, one Sone is equivalent to the sound of a quiet refrigerator in a quiet kitchen. Typically, the Sone level is measured at maximum CFM (speed), however, some newer products are also being tested at normal CFM (speed) settings to provide consumers with typical sound level information.
Statis pressure (measured in Pa) is a unit of measurement used to describe the power to move air at one point. It also means how strong a range hood is in exhausing the cooking fats, grease, steam and odors out of your kitchen.
Comparing Pa to CFM is very similar to comparing an 18-wheeler to a sport car. A slower 18-wheeler with greater horsepower can haul a heavy trailer, whereas a speedy sport car can move very fast but lacks the horsepower to haul a heavy trailer. Range hoods are similar, both high Pa (horsepower) and CFM (speed) are required to exhaust large amount of cooking fats, grease, steam and odors particles out of your kitchen.

SV168 Series: At the first and lowest setting, the output is about 300 CFM. CFM gradually increases to the highest setting up to 850 CFM.
SV218 Series: At the first and lowest setting, the output is about 150 CFM. CFM gradually increases to the highest setting up to 900 CFM.
AP238 Professional Series: At the first and lowest setting, the output is about 385 CFM. CFM gradually increases to the highest setting up to 1000 CFM.

For conventional electric ranges or cook tops, range hood of up to 475 cfm is more than adequate. For high output gas ranges or cook tops, we recommend 100 CFM of ventilation per 10,000 BTU of TOTAL capacity (i.e. BTU's of ALL burners added together), this assumes all burners on at the same time and in their highest setting. Thus, an 80,000 BTU range would demand at least 800 CFM.
Kitchen area is also very important, the Home Ventilation Institute recommends 15 Air Changes per Hour (ACH). To select the right range hood, first calculate the volume of your kitchen: Multiply the floor area in feet by ceiling height - so a kitchen area of 20 ft by 20 ft with an 8 ft ceiling has 3,200 cubic feet. Then divide that by 60 (the number of minutes in an hour), and multiply the result by 15 ACH. You should select a range hood that has a minimum of 800 CFM.
Words of caution: Remember our homes are very airtight these days, where do all the replacement air come from that is being expelled outside? The only sources of air are from fireplace chimney, exhaust on your furnace, and hot water tank. Replacement air coming from these places are highly polluted, you must provide a supply of fresh air should you choose in over sizing the range hood.
There is no national standard for the measurement of CFM or Sones on a non-ducted range hood because the air is not exhausted, it is re-circulated.
The mounted height of the range hood base above the cooking surface should not exceed 31" for both wall-mount and island-mount units. Recommended minimum is 28" above the cooking surface. The range hood should be centered over the cooking surface. This will provide the best capture area for cooking impurities. Consult your local building codes and standards for more information.
Please see illustration here.
The handle (bracket) is reversible. You may install it on the other side of the aluminum filter so the handle (bracket) will be inside the range hood. We do not recommend removing it completely as it provides structural supports for the aluminum filter.

Island-mounted range hoods: The ceiling height from floor to ceiling is important in letting us know which support frame and chimney length would need to be provided for your installation. This measurement can be found by measuring from the floor to the ceiling or from the floor to the intended mounting area.
Wall-mounted range hoods: The ceiling height from floor to ceiling is important in determinng the length of the telescopic chimneys. Higher ceiling height requires taller chimneys. This measurement can be found by measuring from the floor to the ceiling or from the floor to the intended mounting area.
